What is Companies House Identity Verification?

Companies House identity verification ensures that the people running or controlling UK companies are properly identified. Previously, it was possible to register a company without verifying the identity of directors and PSCs, but now, the verification is mandatory.

This is part of a broader effort to modernise and secure the Companies House register. By confirming the identities of directors and PSCs, the government aims to reduce fraud and improve trust and transparency in the business community.

Why You Need to Complete Identity Verification

Failure to verify your identity by the deadline will prevent you from filing key documents with Companies House. This includes confirmation statements, changes to your company’s details, and more. We recommend starting the verification process early  to avoid delays that could affect your business operations.

As your accountants, we are ready to assist you through the process. Whether you need guidance on completing the verification or support with any technical issues, we’ve got you covered.

Key Changes to Companies House Identity Verification:

  • Mandatory Verification: Starting 18th November, 2025, all directors and PSCs must verify their identity before they can file key documents such as confirmation statements.
  • Phased Rollout: While the requirement begins in November 2025, Companies House will be phasing in the verification process over a 12-month period, with full compliance expected by November 2026.
  • New Appointments: Any directors or PSCs appointed after 18th November, 2025, must verify their identity before their appointment can be officially recorded by Companies House.

Who Needs to Verify Their Identity?

The requirement applies to all directors and PSCs of UK companies:

  • Directors: If you're listed as a director on your company’s register, you must verify your identity.
  • PSCs: People with significant control (usually those holding 25% or more of a company’s shares or voting rights) will also need to verify their identity.

Verification Deadline for Existing Directors

Existing directors must complete their identity verification by the date of the company’s next annual confirmation statement filing, on or after 18th November, 2025.

  • This verification requirement must be met within the 12-month transition period, which runs from 18th November, 2025, to November 2026.
  • Important: Your company cannot file the confirmation statement until all directors have completed the verification process. This could result in your company being at risk of being struck off the Companies House register if the deadline is missed.

Verification Deadline for Persons with Significant Control (PSC)

The deadline for PSCs to verify their identity depends on their specific role and status within the company.

  • New PSCs (appointed on or after November 18, 2025): The 14-day verification window begins from the date they are first registered with Companies House.
  • Existing PSCs who are also directors: These PSCs must complete verification by the company’s next confirmation statement filing, on or after 18th November, 2025.
  • Existing PSCs who are not directors: The verification window will begin on the first day of their month of birth, as recorded on the Companies House register.

Note: Failure to verify your identity may prevent you from filing necessary documents, and in the case of directors, could result in legal penalties.

How Can You Complete Companies House ID Verification?

The verification process is quick, secure, and can be done in one of two ways:

1. Verify Through GOV.UK One Login (Online):

What You'll Need: A passport or driving license.

How It Works:

  1. Go to the GOV.UK One Login page.
  2. Enter your personal details.
  3. Verify your identity using the GOV.UK One Login app or visit a Post Office.
  4. Receive a personal verification code (usually within minutes).

2. Verify Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP):

What You'll Need: An ACSP (like us) to assist you.

 How It Works:

If you prefer to verify your identity in person or need additional assistance, we can help you with the process. We will guide you through the verification, submit your details to Companies House, and ensure everything is in order.

What Happens After Verification?

Once your identity is verified, you’ll receive a unique personal verification code. This code must be linked to your role as a director or PSC in the Companies House register. It's essential that you securely store this code, as you'll need it when filing future documents.

 Avoid the Last-Minute Rush:

Don’t wait until the last minute to complete your identity verification. Here’s why:

  • Plan ahead: Completing your verification early will prevent last-minute stress and avoid delays as the deadline approaches.
  • Avoid business disruptions: Missing the deadline could delay your ability to file confirmation statements and other important documents with Companies House, potentially affecting your company’s standing.
